Most age calculators stop at years, months, and days. That civil label answers “how old am I?” It does not answer “have I passed the birthday that unlocks 18 / 21 / 65?” Saying “I’m turning 18 this year” is a calendar-year story; eligibility is a cutoff birthday story.
This page’s framing is Birthday ≠ cutoff. The panel still prints a clear Y/M/D age, then shows year-progress toward the next birthday and an eligibility gate so the integer never pretends to be the unlock.
That is a different job from the day counter (inclusive ≠ exclusive spans) and the day of week finder (civil ≠ business weekdays across anniversary years). Here we stay on age labels versus birthday unlocks.

Civil age borrows across calendar units: if today’s day-of-month is before the birth day-of-month, borrow days from the previous month; if months go negative, borrow a year. That is what forms and tickets usually mean by age — not total days ÷ 365.
Decimal age sits under the verdict as a continuous sketch. Cutoffs almost never use it.

The unique affordance starts with the year-progress fill: how far you are between the last observed birthday and the next one. Beside it: days since last birthday, days until next, and the next birthday date.
That is not an anniversary weekday strip, not an inclusive/exclusive dual count, and not a pregnancy journey rail. It answers: “How deep into this age-year am I?” — the bridge between integer age and the coming birthday.

People born on 29 February do not have that calendar date in common years. This tool observes 28 February in non-leap years for last/next birthday and year-progress. Some jurisdictions use 1 March instead. We pick Feb 28 and state it so Birthday ≠ cutoff stays auditable.

Pick 16, 18, 21, or 65. The panel shows whether that birthday has passed as of the age-at date, and how many calendar days until or since the unlock. Integer age can be 17 with the 18 gate still pending — or 18 with the gate already open. That gap is Birthday ≠ cutoff.

Example A — Turning 18 soon. Load the preset. Civil age shows 17y … while gate 18 is still pending with days until the unlock birthday. Year-progress shows how far through the 17→18 age-year you are.
Example B — Just turned. Birthday was recent: progress fill is low, days until next birthday are high, and a lower gate (21) may already be unlocked while you wait for the next candle.
Example C — Near 65. Same logic at the other end of life: the senior gate is a birthday, not “the year I turn 65” on a calendar cover.

Next-birthday and gate countdowns are calendar days. They ignore weekends and holidays. For workday-aware spans, use the workday calculator. For “how many days between two dates” with inclusive vs exclusive ends, use the day counter.

A cutoff — turning 18, voting, a senior fare — unlocks on a specific birthday. “I’m turning 18 this year” is not the same as having passed the 18th birthday. We subtract calendar dates with month/day borrowing: if the day-of-month has not arrived yet, borrow from months; if months go negative, borrow from years. That is the usual Y/M/D age, not a pure day-count divided by 365.
In non-leap years this tool observes February 28 as the birthday for progress and next-birthday countdown. Other jurisdictions sometimes use March 1. We state Feb 28 explicitly so Birthday ≠ cutoff stays honest.
