Technology calculators

A decision map for data sizes, transfer time, passwords, number bases, and bandwidth cost. Start with three steps, then open a lane. The full index sits at the bottom.

5 tools · client-side · educational IT utilities, not security audits or ISP contracts.

Three IT jobs. One primary tool each.

  1. 01

    Convert the data size

KB, MB, GB, and GiB are easy to mix. Convert the payload size before you estimate transfer time or storage cost.

  2. 02

    Estimate download time

Throughput and file size set how long a transfer takes. Use a realistic Mbps figure, not the marketing peak, for planning.

  3. 03

    Generate a stronger password

Short reused passwords fail first. Generate a long random secret and store it in a password manager instead of a spreadsheet.

Decision lanes

Pick the job you have. Each lane points to the matching tool.

Passwords

Gotchas before you ship

Short warnings with a tool handoff.

Decimal and binary prefixes differ

1 GB (10^9) is not 1 GiB (2^30). Storage vendors and OS dialogs often disagree. Convert with the prefix the tool or vendor uses.

Data size

Peak Mbps is not sustained Mbps

Download time estimates fail when you use the ISP's peak number. Use a measured average for planning.

Download time

Generated passwords still need storage

A strong password you cannot retrieve is locked out forever. Save it in a manager; do not email it to yourself in plaintext.

Bandwidth bills have floors and overages

A simple GB × rate model can miss minimums and tiers. Treat the cost sketch as a planning bound, then check the invoice rules.
