Live tip-rate ladder and pre-tax vs after-tax base mirror - so a familiar percent never pretends to pick the dollars it multiplies.
Educational check math. Rate vs base. Not legal advice, wage guidance, or universal etiquette for every country.

“Twenty percent” sounds like a complete answer. It is not. A tip rate only becomes money after you choose the base - usually the pre-tax subtotal, sometimes the total after sales tax, occasionally a post-discount amount.
This page’s framing is Rate vs base. The panel still prints a clear tip and grand total, then refuses to hide how the same percent changes dollars when the base includes tax.
That is a different job from the tip & bill split calculator, which leans into uneven shares and named people, and from the percentage calculator, which teaches percent operations without restaurant base literacy.
Decision framing: “Which dollars am I taking 20% of?” - not only “Is 20% enough?”
02
The unique affordance pairs a base mirror with a tip-rate ladder. The mirror holds the tip % fixed and shows tip dollars on the pre-tax bill versus the after-tax total, plus the premium for tipping on tax.
That mirror is intentionally unlike recent renewals: not a pregnancy trimester journey strip, not a SIP flat vs step-up twin, not a running even-split race ladder. One interaction for Rate vs base.
Tap a mirror row to select which base drives the verdict and per-person equal split. Many U.S. diners tip on pre-tax; some apps default to after-tax - seeing both prevents surprise.
03
Ladder chips stress 15, 18, 20, 22, and 25 percent. Each chip shows tip dollars on the pre-tax base and the after-tax tip, so you can climb the rate without losing the base story.
Customs vary by place and service type. A coffee counter, rideshare, and fine-dining room do not share one universal percent - the ladder is a planning range, not etiquette law.
Try Post-tax trap after Dinner for two - same check, after-tax base selected - watch the premium line.
04
Sales tax belongs to the jurisdiction; tip is usually discretionary. When a restaurant adds an automatic gratuity or service charge for large parties, read the receipt before stacking another full tip on top.
For pure tax math without tipping, use the sales tax calculator. For coupon stacking before tip, the discount calculator helps - then return here to choose the tip base on the discounted subtotal.
Countries with service compris or strong no-tip norms need different behavior than U.S. full-service restaurants. Travelers should follow local posted customs, not this panel’s U.S.-centric examples.
05
This page splits the selected grand total evenly. That is enough for many friend groups and quick card math. It is not enough when one person ordered wine flights and another had water.
For itemized or named uneven shares, hand off to the tip & bill split calculator. Keep Rate vs base literacy here; keep social split mechanics there.

Example A · Dinner for two. Preset: $86 pre-tax, 8% tax, 20% on pre-tax, two people. Read tip, total, and each share.
Example B · Post-tax trap. Same numbers with after-tax base. Compare the premium line - Rate vs base in one toggle.
Example C · Solo coffee. Preset: small bill, 0% tax, 15% - ladder still shows higher rates if you want to round up.
Example D · Large party. Preset: six people at 18%. Check whether the venue already added auto-grat before stacking tip.
After presets, enter your receipt. Share only when bill, tax, tip, people, and base mode match what you intend to send.
07
Most tip math harm is base confusion and double-tipping on service charges - not arithmetic typos.
08
Share links snapshot bill, tax, tip, people, and base mode. Live typing never rewrites the address bar.
09
Stop here for Rate vs base literacy: tip rate ladder and pre-tax versus after-tax bases with equal split. Hand off for custom shares, pure tax, or percent pedagogy.

A tip rate (like 20%) is only half the decision. The tip base is the dollar amount that percentage multiplies - often the pre-tax bill, sometimes the post-tax total. This page’s framing is Rate vs base so a familiar percent is not mistaken for a fixed tip dollar amount.
It shows common tip rates (15–25%) with tip dollars on both pre-tax and after-tax bases, plus the gap between those bases. That ladder is the unique affordance - different from pregnancy journey strips, SIP flat/step-up twins, running even-split ladders, or lifestyle bill-split custom shares.
It compares the same tip % applied to the pre-tax bill versus the bill after sales tax. Tipping on tax usually costs more; many diners prefer pre-tax as the base when local norms allow.
Customs vary. In many U.S. restaurants people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but some receipts and apps default to post-tax. Service charges, auto-grat for large parties, and included-service countries change the etiquette - ask or follow posted policy.
This finance tip page focuses on Rate vs base literacy - rate ladder and pre-tax vs after-tax bases, with equal per-person split. The lifestyle tip & bill split tool is better for tax lines plus uneven custom shares among named people.
