Concrete Volume: Net Pour vs Order-With-Waste

Net pour vs order-with-waste

Net pour is pure geometry: length × width × thickness (plus other shapes you add).

Order volume is net plus a waste factor for over-excavation, uneven subgrade, spillage, and form bulge.

Net volume (ft³) = length (ft) × width (ft) × thickness (ft)
Net volume (yd³) = net ft³ ÷ 27
Order yd³        = net yd³ × (1 + waste fraction)

Ready-mix tickets and bag counts should track the order side. Ordering only the optimistic net is how mid-pour shortages happen.

Shape chips (break weird plans into solids)

Most DIY slabs are rectangles. For L-shapes, split into two rectangles and add volumes. Circles use:

Volume = π × radius² × thickness

Footings are often long rectangular trenches. Keep thickness in feet (4 inches = 4/12 ft), not mixed units.

Units: yards, meters, and bags

  • 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet
  • Metric: work in m³ (length × width × thickness in meters)
  • Bag yields vary by brand and bag weight. A common planning sketch treats an 80 lb bag as about 0.60 ft³ of mixed concrete and a 60 lb bag as about 0.45 ft³. Always read the bag label.
Bags ≈ order ft³ ÷ yield ft³ per bag

Round up. Partial bags still require a full bag on the shelf.

Worked patio: 12 × 16 ft at 4 inches

Thickness = 4/12 = 0.333… ft
Net ft³   = 12 × 16 × (4/12) = 64 ft³
Net yd³   = 64 ÷ 27 ≈ 2.37 yd³

With 10% waste:

Order yd³ ≈ 2.37 × 1.10 ≈ 2.61 yd³
Order ft³ ≈ 70.4 ft³

Bag ladder (label-yield sketch):

80 lb @ ~0.60 ft³ → 70.4 ÷ 0.60 ≈ 117.3 → order 118 bags
60 lb @ ~0.45 ft³ → 70.4 ÷ 0.45 ≈ 156.4 → order 157 bags

Thickness and strength (planning notes, not a design)

Typical DIY conversation ranges (confirm with local practice and load):

  • Walkways / patios: often about 4 inches
  • Driveways: often thicker, with base prep and reinforcement decisions
  • Strength (PSI) and mix are product choices; volume math does not pick the mix for you

Under-thickness saves bags and risks cracks. Over-thickness burns budget. Measure the form depth you will actually pour, including any slope for drainage.

Pour-day checklist that protects the math

  1. Remeasure forms after staking, not from the napkin sketch.
  2. Convert thickness to feet (or meters) before multiplying.
  3. Choose a waste percent honestly for grade quality.
  4. Decide bags vs ready-mix from order volume and crew size.
  5. Have a plan for leftover: small projects, cleanup, or return rules for unused bags.
  6. Do not start a structural pour without a design you trust.

Cold weather, hot weather, and curing change quality; they do not change the geometry formula. Follow mix and curing guidance on the product or from your ready-mix supplier.

FAQ

Why order more than the calculated slab volume?

Because net geometry ignores waste. Spillage, uneven subgrade, and form errors eat volume. The order number is the planning number.

Is 10% waste always enough?

No. Clean, flat work can run near 5–10%. Rough digs and complex edges often need more. Raise the factor when conditions are messy.

Should I buy bags or call a truck?

Small pads and repairs often favor bags. Once order volume climbs past a couple of cubic yards, ready-mix usually wins on labor and consistency. Compare cost and crew, not only unit price.

Do I include gravel base in the concrete volume?

No. Base is a separate material. Concrete volume is the thickness of concrete in the forms, not the excavation depth unless you are filling the entire excavation with concrete (unusual for slabs on grade).

Can this calculator replace an engineer?

No. It estimates volume. It does not size reinforcement, thickness for loads, or mix for exposure class.
