Ending balance = total deposits + growth (interest / returns)

Same cash in, earlier dollars work longer. The lump wins this artificial race because all money is invested on day one. Real investors rarely have the lump; the drip is how most people fund accounts. The lesson is timing, not “DCA is worse.”

Start with $10,000, add $200/month, 7%, monthly compound, 20 years.

Rough ending balance ≈ $145,000
Deposits ≈ $10,000 + $48,000 = $58,000
Growth ≈ $87,000

Now shut off the drip (lump only $10,000):

A ≈ $40,400

Frequency delta (when n changes)

Compounding more often usually raises effective yield for a fixed nominal rate:

7%:  10,000 × 1.07^20 ≈ $38,700
6%:  10,000 × 1.06^20 ≈ $32,100
Gap ≈ $6,600 on the same principal
